TEAM 1: Gabriel Kroiz and Eliza Steinmeier

An award-winning designer and preservationist, Gabriel Kroiz has more than fifteen years of experience as an architect, builder, and educator. In 2008, Kroiz joined the School of Architecture and Planning at Morgan State University as the undergraduate program director and is working to achieve the school’s missions of providing access to the design professions for African Americans and performing research focused on the sustainable redevelopment of Baltimore and the surrounding region.

Baltimore native Eliza Steinmeier has devoted her professional life to working in, teaching about, and defending the marine environment. After graduating from UCLA School of Law, she worked on Santa Monica Baykeeper’s landmark sewage case against the city of Los Angeles, which has resulted in significant improvements in the health of the Santa Monica Bay. In 2004, Steinmeier founded the Magdalena Baykeeper in Baja California Sur in Mexico. She has been the executive director and waterkeeper for Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper since 2007.

Divining Baltimore: A Visioning Exercise

Meet your team: Gabriel, Eliza, and Chris

Typically, Urbanite Projects consist of a two-member team. However, Gabriel and Eliza decided to include a third member to round out the project. Chris Streb of Biohabitats provided critical insight into the hydrological considerations as well as enlisted the talented landscape engineers at Biohabitats to create the image we used for the project. We extent a heartfelt thanks to Chris and the entire Biohabitats team!

Christopher Streb, PE, LEED AP
Ecological Engineer, Biohabitats

Chris is an ecological engineer who enjoys developing radical solutions borrowed from four billion years of evolution to solve the problems of dirty water, spoiled air, and lost biodiversity. With dreams of eco-cities where humans can delight in nature, farms, and cafés without getting in a car, he originally made little progress toward convincing others with capital to make his wishes come true. Not to be discouraged, Chris found his niche at Biohabitats, where he is advancing the effort to balance the needs of man and nature through stream restoration design and alternative landscape plumbing techniques.
