- Look out below: 500 Clown Macbeth is a darkly comic, slapstick take on the Shakespearean tragedy.
This month, Creative Alliance hosts a topsy-turvy production of the Shakespearean tragedy
Macbeth by Chicago-based physical theater group 500 Clown. That's right, clowns—although five hundred is a slight exaggeration. The three-person troupe adopts an antic disposition to tell the tale without words, instead employing physical humor and a good deal of gooey stage blood. It's part of QuestFest, a two-week festival running March 1–14 of "visual theater," which conveys stories through movement, gestures, and images. (Go to
www.questfest.com for info about other area performances.)
This version of the Scottish Play isn't without serious overtones, though. There's a sense of horseplay gone bad, and audience members can't help but worry that a misplaced step could lead to the be-all and end-all of a company member. The production sold out its first Baltimore performance in 2002, so get tickets early.
For more unorthodox takes on the Bard: At the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's first Pub Night of 2010, attendees can perform romance-themed verses alongside company members. "It's very informal," says Jenny Leopold, CSC's associate director and the evening's host. "The idea is to have a drink, have something to eat, and talk about Shakespeare."
