A Stitch in Time

Maryland Academy of Couture Arts

Ella Pritsker, designer of the couture line Ella Moda, is fighting back against mass-produced clothing by teaching the finer points of custom fashion. Her Maryland Academy of Couture Arts (20 E. Timonium Rd., Suite 312; 410-560-3910; www.marylandacademyofcouturearts.com) offers classes for beginning and advanced students, as well as a pattern-making course. “Couture doesn’t have to be out of the reach of the masses; we can create our own couture,” says Pritsker, a native of Russia. Opened last fall, the academy has seen a steady stream of eager fashion-istas tackling sleeve rolls and hand stitching. This summer, Pritsker is partnering with the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum on a program for 9- to 12-year-olds (contact the academy for more information). She hopes to show the next generation “how to approach art from the point of fashion.”

Season floral arrangements for late-fall weddings

I’m getting married this fall, and I’ve heard that if you get flowers out of season, they can be quite expensive. Can you advise me on fragrant, seasonal floral arrangements on the lower end of the price scale?
